Few things are quite as beautiful to watch as Olympic figure skating.
Since its debut back in 1908, the sport has brought everything from career-defining triple axels (Midori Ito, 1992) and illegal one-bladed backflips (Surya Bonaly, 1998) to monumental fashion moments (Michelle Kwan in Vera Wang, 1998) and heated rivalries.
Skaters such as Dorothy Hamill and Peggy Fleming have become household names, and in 2017, Margot Robbie’s “I, Tonya” took the sport to the big screen, immortalizing the 1994 attack for years to come.
A balance of art and athleticism, Olympic figure skating is not only one of the most popular sports to catch at the Winter Games, but is also the oldest, thanks to a 1908 debut. Split into five events, it emphasizes both power and precision. Judged on jumps and spins (men’s singles, women’s singles), partner lifts and throws (pairs), choreography and footwork (ice dance), and team performance, brings together each discipline for a country’s overall score.
Here, we take a look at all the ice skaters to watch in Milan as the 2026 Winter Olympics begin on Feb. 6—from Team USA’s Amber Glenn and Alysa Liu to Team GB’s Spice Girls-like duo Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson.
