The Archdiocese of Omaha confirmed a deacon at St. Peter’s Catholic Church is dead hours after police responded to a homicide call at his home.In a statement on the church’s website, Deacon John Zak “died suddenly. His death is a great shock to his family and to our parish.”On Wednesday night, Omaha police were called to a home near 36th and Cass streets, which property records confirm is Zak’s home. The Archdiocese of Omaha confirmed a deacon at St. Peter’s Catholic Church is dead hours after police responded to a homicide call at his home.

In a statement on the church’s website, Deacon John Zak “died suddenly. His death is a great shock to his family and to our parish.”

On Wednesday night, Omaha police were called to a home near 36th and Cass streets, which property records confirm is Zak’s home. Upon arrival, officers found a man dead.

Police said a vehicle of interest was spotted on Thursday morning, and an attempted traffic stop near Interstate 80 and 13th Street led to a pursuit. The pursuit ended near 10th and Martha streets, resulting in officers taking one person into custody.

The church also said on its website that Zak had been with the parish as a deacon for over 25 years.
