‘Brady Bunch’ house designated a Los Angeles landmark

TO HEAR TALK JOSH AND APPLE JOSH. 1971 BRADY BUNCH GOLD, PETER BRADY TURNS HUMPHREY BOGART AND GIVES US ALL A LINE TO SAY OVER AND OVER FOR OUR LIVES. FAST FORWARD 53 YEARS. SAY IT FOR ME. I CAN’T, I DON’T HAVE THE SAME SHAPED MOUTH THAT I DID WHEN I WAS A YOUTH. THAT’S ALL RIGHT. WE’RE WE’RE PATIENT. PORT JOSH. YOU KNOW, JOSH. CHRISTOPHER KNIGHT IS NOT ONLY A GOOD SPORT, HE’S A REALLY GOOD PERSON. SITTING WITH US TALKING ABOUT THE CHARITY HERE. HE RELIGIOUSLY SUPPORTS THE JOURNEY FORWARD AND ITS FOUNDER, DAN CUMMINGS, A PLACE THAT MAKES THE LIVES OF THOSE WITH SPINAL CORD INJURIES BETTER. THE WORD HERO, YOU KNOW, AS SOMEBODY THAT YOU HAS HEROIC. IT’S HIM. I WOULDN’T HAVE THAT ATTITUDE IF I HAD HAD BEEN THROUGH WHAT HE’S THROUGH, YOU KNOW, AND HE GIVES BACK AND HE GIVES BACK AND YOU’RE GIVING BACK. IT’S GIVING HIM PURPOSE. HE SAYS TO ME, HE’S LIKE, I PUT YOU IN A CHAIR FOR TEN YEARS. YOU’LL NEVER WALK AGAIN. I WANT TO BE TAUGHT HOW TO GET OUT OF IT. OKAY, SO HOW DO WE HELP YOU AND THAT GOODWILL CAME FROM SOMEONE HE CALLED MOM ON THE SHOW. I WAS TAUGHT VERY EARLY AND VERY WELL BY FLORENCE, BY FLORENCE, BY FLORENCE HENDERSON. SHE HAD A BIG IMPACT ON YOU. YEAH, YEAH, A HUGE I MEAN, AND I RECOGNIZE HOW LARGE AN IMPACT SHE HAD OVER TIME. MORE AND MORE ISN’T THAT AMAZING? IT STAYS WITH ME AND I RECOGNIZE THAT IT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT. AND AND I KNOW IT’S TETHERED BACK THERE. YOU KNOW, I HAD TWO SETS OF PARENTS, IF YOU WILL. I HAD TWO FAMILIES AND THEY WEREN’T THE SAME. SO SHE WAS A ROLE MODEL THAT YOU KNOW, MAYBE BECAUSE I WAS INFLUENCED BY HER, YOU KNOW, AS A KID THAT THAT A LOT OF THAT SEEPED IN AND STAYS WITH ME TO THIS DAY, YOU KNOW. AND SHE WAS GOOD WITH HER, WITH HER FANS. SHE WAS RESPECTFUL. SHE WAS FUNNY. SHE WAS HUMAN. SHE WAS A GOOD PERSON. SO LET’S TALK ABOUT THE BRADY BUNCH. DOES EVERYBODY SAY, HEY PETER BRADY. AND DO THEY SAY WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE EPISODE? BECAUSE I’M GOING TO SAY, HEY PETER BRADY, WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE EPISODE? YES AND YES. OKAY. EVERY ONE OF US ANSWERS THE SAME EPISODE. IT’S THE HAWAII EPISODES. AND OURS WAS HAWAII BECAUSE WE HAD THAT EXPERIENCE AND THE FAVORITE EPISODES FOR US WERE NOT WHAT YOU WATCHED, BUT WHAT HAPPENED BEHIND THE CAMERA. RIGHT? OUR EXPERIENCE IN DOING IT. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THAT SHOW THAT SOMEHOW PERMEATED OUR SOULS AND WANTED US TO BE IN THAT HOUSE WITH THAT FAMILY? WHAT WAS IT? YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS. NO. IT’S SIMPLICITY. BECAUSE INSIDE OF ALL OF US, NO MATTER HOW COMPLICATED WE BECOME, WE WISH FOR IT TO BE SIMPLE. EVEN IF OUR CHILDHOOD WASN’T HAPPY, IF WE ESCAPED THROUGH THE BRADY PORTAL AND OUR RECOLLECTION’S THERE. THAT WAS A BONDED MOMENT. THOUGHTFUL, RIGHT? ABSOLUTELY. ESCAPING THROUGH THE BRADY PORTAL, WHICH IS WHAT WE DID WHEN WE WERE KIDS AND WE WANTED TO BE PART OF THAT FAMILY. SO NICE TO HEAR HIS REMINISCES ABOUT FLORENCE HENDERSON, BECAUSE YOU AND I HAD THE PLEASURE. TRULY A PLEASURE OF INTERVIEWING HER RIGHT BEFORE SHE PASSED. AND WE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE LOVELY. HOW LOVELY WAS SHE? SHE WAS. SHE LOVED BEN. I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT ON TELEVISION. SHE LOVED HIM AND SHE WAS SO LOVELY. AND CHRISTOPHER KNIGHT IS THE REAL DEAL. HE IS TONIGHT AT 11. WHAT HE REVEALED ABOUT A VERY POPULAR EPISODE THAT MAY CHANGE HOW YOU WATCH IT FOREVER. AND HERE’S A HINT THEY’RE SINGING. WE SORT OF GAVE YOU A PREVIEW BEFORE ALL OF THIS. AND AS FOR THAT EVENT, WE TALKED ABOUT CHRISTOPHER KNIGHT WILL BE AT KING’S IN DEDHAM THIS THURSDAY. THURSDAY NIGHT, CASINO NIGHT, TO SUPPORT THE GREAT JOURNEY FORWARD WITH DAN CUMMINGS. YOU CAN STILL BUY TICKETS. THEY WOULD LOVE YOU TO GO MEET HIM. YOU CAN GET A LINK WITH THIS STORY ON OUR WEBSITE AND ON OUR WCVB APP. I HOPE YOU DO. I HOPE HOW NICE THAT HE COMES BACK YEAR AFTER YEAR TO SUPPORT IT. HE DOES FOR A LONG

Here’s the story … of how a modest mid-century home became a Los Angeles landmark. The LA city council voted unanimously on Wednesday to designate the so-called “Brady Bunch” house in the San Fernando Valley as a historic-cultural monument. The vote grants landmark protections to the house on Dilling Avenue that was used for exterior shots of the TV sitcom that ran from 1969 to 1974.Interior scenes were shot on a soundstage, with sets that bore no resemblance to the property that become a photo-op magnet for “Brady Bunch” fans. The show, which lived on for decades in syndication, featured the comic travails of a family of six blended-family siblings — “the youngest one in curls,” as the theme song explained. The shingle-and-stone home with a peaked roof also appeared in the 1995 big screen film “The Brady Bunch Movie” and its sequel. The landmark status protects the home, built in 1959, from demolition or major renovations — but doesn’t prohibit them. The vote grants landmark protections to the house on Dilling Avenue that was used for exterior shots of the TV sitcom that ran from 1969 to 1974.

Interior scenes were shot on a soundstage, with sets that bore no resemblance to the property that become a photo-op magnet for “Brady Bunch” fans.

If owners ever decide to make big changes, they would be subject to a design review and the Cultural Heritage Commission can delay the process to find preservation solutions.

The nonprofit LA Conservancy pushed for the landmark status and CEO Adrian Scott Fine said he was thrilled it was approved. He said fans of the show have a personal connection to the property.

“If you watched the ‘Brady Bunch,’ you knew this house. People make a pilgrimage to see it,” Fine said Wednesday. “To have it designated like this, it makes it all the sweeter.”

When the house went on the market in 2018, the cable network HGTV won a bidding war that drove the price up to $3.5 million — or $1.6 million over the listing price for the then-2,400-square-foot residence.

The house was expanded, remodeled and redecorated to give it trademark elements of the set version, including the wood-paneled living room with a floating staircase and an orange-and-green kitchen.

The process was documented in a four-part HGTV miniseries called “A Very Brady Renovation.”
