The pastor who officiated a wedding during Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show says his role in the biggest pop culture event of the year began with a phone call.Antonio Reyes is one of the pastors at Project Church South Sacramento, which he joined in 2024, according to the church. Since then, he’s worked to expand worship opportunities in English and Spanish. Reyes spoke to sister station KCRA a day after he was captured on national television leading a bride and groom through their nuptials as Bad Bunny performed “Baile Inolvidable” nearby with Lady Gaga during the halftime show at Levi’s Stadium. Reyes said he has connections in the entertainment industry from having pastored in Los Angeles. About three weeks ago, a friend connected him with Becky G’s manager, who was looking to marry a couple.“They called me and said, ‘Hey, this couple wants to get married. We don’t know if he’s a celebrity,” Reyes said. “We don’t know what it’s for. Are you open?”“I said, “Sure, let’s have the conversation. Why not?”He didn’t know the wedding would be part of a Super Bowl performance in front of 70,000 stadium fans until he received a nondisclosure agreement. He asked his wife, who is a teacher, to read it.“I’m waiting for my wife to help me sign it too, because I want to make sure I’m reading it right,” he recalled. “As soon as she’s reading it, she starts screaming—yelling like, ‘Oh my gosh!’”Reyes said up until that point he had been confused.“I don’t know — am I marrying Benito? What is happening?” he said.Reyes said he was honored to be “part of such a monumental moment.”But the halftime show role would become the biggest secret he’s ever kept from his congregation.“And so it was very difficult not to be able to share this joy with people,” he said.Reyes said he was in Santa Clara for a week leading up to the game, and there were a lot of late nights to prepare for the show.“I have a whole new level of respect for dancers and people in that industry,” he said. “It was very long days, just practicing, because we were part of something bigger than just that moment.”Rehearsals first happened in a field next to Levi’s Stadium before the final run-throughs in the stadium.Reyes said he couldn’t share too many details about the couple who were married because he wants them to share their story. But said he had met them weeks prior to the Super Bowl and called them a “very lovely couple.”“We were trying to make it as official as possible, because that’s what was asked of us,” Reyes said of the halftime event. “But the actual vows happened beforehand.”Bad Bunny’s representatives said the couple had invited him to their wedding and instead received an invite from the Grammy-winning musician to appear in his halftime show. Bad Bunny even served as a witness and signed their marriage certificate.Asked what he took away from the experience, Reyes called it “beautiful.”“As a Mexican, as a Latino, to be part of that — it meant a lot,” he said. “The first time I stepped onto the field, I was very emotional. It wasn’t just a show. It was what it represented. It was a moment to represent my faith as a follower of Jesus, and also to represent Latinos. I’m just a local church pastor serving my community in south Sacramento. They wanted real people on that stage.”The Associated Press contributed to this story.
