While this does not always cause it, many strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause cervical cancer. HPV is a common sexually transmitted infection that can survive in the body for years. Since it can live in the body for years, it can cause cervical cells to become cancer cells.Cervical cancer is preventable through the HPV vaccine that both boys and girls can get around puberty age. There can be two or three doses, depending on your age, when you get the vaccine.It is also preventable through regular Pap smears. People with cervixes are encouraged to get a Pap smear every three to five years. Those who have not gotten the HPV vaccine are encouraged to get it more frequently.Symptoms of cervical cancer can include abnormal vaginal bleeding, unusual vaginal discharge, pelvic pain and pain during intercourse. It is important that if you have any of those symptoms to go to a doctor for further testing.
