‘Could be the nail in the coffin’: Omaha Steaks ends foodservice operations, leaving local restaurants concerned

In an email obtained by KETV, Omaha Steaks said it is ending its foodservice business, leaving many local businesses in a tough spot.KETV NewsWatch 7’s Eddie Messel spoke with the owner of Paddy McGown’s, who said he’s wondering where they will get their beef from now. Dan Emsick said he received a text notification on Tuesday about the decision.”After a few more conversations, basically I was wondering where and what I was going to do for product and supplies,” Emsick said.Emsick provided an email from Omaha Steaks explaining the decision. The email stated, “This decision reflects where our company is growing and where we are making significant long-term investments—specifically in retail, direct-to-consumer, subscription, and corporate gifting channels. Focusing our resources in these areas allows us to best leverage our facilities and capabilities while positioning Omaha Steaks for sustained future growth.””Difference is, if they would have came to us and said ‘hey, we made some restructuring issues. We have a month left. This is the new way of ordering for the next month. We will have product for that. After that we’ve decided to go a different way.’ Cold turkey is just shut shop,” Emsick said. “It’s crazy, crazy to me. Absolutely no warning, no it’s just crazy.”He is now worried that switching to a new provider will result in higher costs, estimating an increase of at least one to two dollars per pound for beef. “When I originally got this, I contacted my wife and I said this could be the nail in the coffin,” he said.According to the email, Omaha Steaks will end fulfillment operations after Friday with orders currently in their system as of February 10 being fulfilled as placed. “We recognize that this change will require adjustments on your end, and our team is committed to working closely with you to ensure an orderly transition during this period,” the email said.”That’s the gist of it. I guess everybody wants to know why all a sudden this wasn’t good enough,” Emsick said.
