Dale Earnhardt Sr. was hopeful about next season in 1992 interview

Earnhardt Sr.’s plan was to finally win the Daytona 500 in 1993.

For Dale Earnhardt and the Richard Childress Goodrich racing team, 1992 was *** very frustrating year. Earnhardt had grown accustomed to winning. He is *** five-time Winston Cup champion, including titles in 1980, plus back to back wins in 198986 and 198987 and 1990 and 19991. He did pick up one win last year, that coming in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte, but the rest of the year was pretty much *** struggle for the team that fans had grown accustomed to seeing in victory lane. Mechanical problems plagued the Good Ranch team off and on all year, and that has left them looking for solutions for 1993. We had some long meetings, uh, at the end of the season in November, and, uh, I think from those meetings we’ve got *** better direction of what we want to do. 1992 was. Tough year, but you know you gotta put them behind you and go on and the 93 is our focus right now for Daytona and try to get in here and try to win, uh, the Daytona 500 for our first time and, you know, get the season started off right. The Good Ranch team will have *** new crew chief this season. Kirk Shelmardine left the team at the end of the year, and now on board is Andy Petrie, formerly with the Harry Gant Gold Bandit team. You know, coming from an operation like I came from, first class all the way, coming into another one is first class all the way. You know that’s made it *** lot easier because it the, the operations are very similar. I look for *** lot of good things from this team, and you can expect the good wrench team to be *** major factor in Chevrolet’s trying to recapture the manufacturer’s title. All the Chevrolet teams have, uh, been, you know, going to the wind tunnel test together, taking. *** man from each team we’re trying to work *** little more closely together and comparative trying to better our product and, uh, get it the best we can get it together. Dale says that last year’s disappointment has turned into motivation for 1993. Buddy Pittman, 2 News sports.
