Dr. Ralph Abraham is stepping down from his role as principal deputy director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He cites unforeseen family obligations as the reason for his decision to step down. The CDC’s statement read: “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced today that Dr. Ralph Abraham has stepped down as Principal Deputy Director, effective immediately.”Dr. Abraham led with clarity and discipline, advancing the CDC’s mission to protect the health and safety of the American people. He worked directly with career staff and public health partners to strengthen national preparedness and improve the country’s emergency response efforts.”Dr. Abraham chose to step down to address unforeseen family obligations.”It has been an honor to serve alongside the dedicated public health professionals at the CDC and to support the agency’s critical mission,” Abraham said.”CDC leadership thanks Dr. Abraham for his service and his contributions to the agency and to the nation,” the CDC’s statement said.Prior to taking his role with the CDC, Abraham served as Louisiana’s first Surgeon General. He launched a failed campaign for governor in 2019 and gave up his congressional seat in 2020.Abraham has been a practicing family medicine physician in Richland Parish for more than 30 years and served three terms in Congress, representing Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District. Before earning his Medical Doctor degree from LSU Health Shreveport, he practiced veterinary medicine for 10 years.
