Free day of history-filled activities recognize Nebraska’s 159 birthday

LINCOLN — The Nebraska History Museum and other state historic sites will offer free admission Saturday in honor of Nebraska’s 159th birthday. 

Statehood Day officially is March 1. The weekend activities are made possible through the Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation, a press release said.

Family-friendly festivities for all ages will be held 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. Saturday at the Nebraska History Museum, the Ethel S. and Christopher J. Abbott Visitor Center at Chimney Rock, the Fort Robinson History Center, the Norris House in McCook and the Neligh Mill in Neligh. 

Activities range from Nebraska-themed bingo, scavenger hunts, history presentations and creating one’s own Nebraska state symbol.

History presentations include a talk on the geologic history of the Nebraska Sandhills by Conservation Nebraska’s Dr. David Loope 11 a.m. Saturday at the history museum.
