President Donald Trump announced the launch of a new website that allows people to directly buy prescription drugs from manufacturers at a discounted rate, featuring more than 40 medications including weight loss and fertility drugs.”Dozens of the most commonly used prescription drugs will be available at dramatic discounts for all consumers through a new website,” Trump said. The government-hosted website is not a platform to buy medications but serves as a facilitator, directing Americans to drug makers’ websites where they can make purchases. Patients will be required to pay out of pocket and not through insurance, which experts say could mainly benefit people without health insurance because these direct-to-consumer prices may not beat the cost-sharing amounts they would pay using insurance. The website also provides coupons to use at pharmacies.”There is some value in direct-to-consumer sales of prescription drugs for some people,” said Juliette Cubanski from KFF. “But I think the overall impact will be relatively limited.”Cubanski says if you have health insurance and purchase drugs through TrumpRx, that will not count towards your deductible. TrumpRx features discounted drugs from at least 16 companies the administration negotiated agreements with, including Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Eli Lilly. Some of the medications on the website include obesity drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy.According to the White House, those injectable medications are normally priced between $1,000-$1,300, however both would cost on average around $350 and as low as about $200 through TrumpRx depending on the dosage strength. The Wegovy pill could fall from $1,300 to $149 using the site. Keep watching for the latest from the Washington News Bureau:
