THE PENTAGON SAYS THE AMERICAN SOLDIERS WERE KILLED IN AN IRANIAN DRONE STRIKE IN KUWAIT ON SUNDAY. 42 YEAR OLD SERGEANT FIRST CLASS NOAH TEACHINGS OF BELLEVUE DIED ALONG WITH THE 20 YEAR-OLD SERGEANT DECLAN CODY OF WEST DES MOINES. BOTH WERE ASSIGNED TO THE 103RD SUSTAINMENT COMMAND, BASED IN DES MOINES. OMAHA’S NEWS LEADER HAS TEAM COVERAGE TONIGHT. FIRST, BETH CARLSON LEADS US OFF AT THE ELKHORN ARMY SERVICES. BETH. TONIGHT WE SPOKE TO A FELLOW MEMBER OF HIS UNIT ON THE LEGACY HE LEAVES BEHIND A NATIONAL HERO REMEMBERED HERE IN NEBRASKA. IT’S A TRAGEDY, AND THERE’S NO WAY AROUND THAT. SERGEANT FIRST CLASS NOAH TIETJENS WAS KILLED IN ACTION WHILE SERVING IN KUWAIT AS PART OF THE U.S. ARMY RESERVES. TIETJENS WAS A PART OF THE 443RD TRANSPORTATION COMPANY BASED IN ELKHORN. HE WAS THE MOTOR SERGEANT, AND I WAS A YOUNG SPECIALIST THERE, AND AFTER BEING SOME TIME AWAY FROM THE ARMY, HE TOOK ME UNDER HIS WING AND GOT ME TO WHERE I NEEDED TO BE FOR A MILITARY CAREER. REALLY TAKE OFF FROM THERE. ARMY STAFF SERGEANT JOHN COLEMAN SAYS TIETJENS WAS A MENTOR TO HIM. SARGENT TIETJENS WAS THE KIND OF GUY THAT WAS ALWAYS AROUND TO HELP YOU. NO MATTER WHAT YOU NEEDED. YOU COULD CALL HIM DAY OR NIGHT. HE ALWAYS TOOK THE TIME, YOU KNOW, HE MADE YOU FEEL IMPORTANT AND THAT’S THAT’S HARD TO FIND SOMETIMES IN THE MILITARY. TIETJENS ENLISTED IN THE ARMY RESERVE IN 2006 AS A WHEELED VEHICLE MECHANIC. HE HAD TWO DEPLOYMENTS IN KUWAIT, 1 IN 2009, ANOTHER IN 2019. THESE GUYS ARE COMBAT HEAVY. THEY MOVE HEAVY ARMOR AND EQUIPMENT INTO THEATERS. SO, YOU KNOW, WITHOUT A UNIT THAT’S CAPABLE TO DO THAT, YOU KNOW, IT REALLY STOPS THE FRONT LINES. TIETJENS MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE FOR HIS COUNTRY. KILLED IN THE OPENING HOURS OF THE CONFLICT IN IRAN. BUT HIS LIFE FOREVER REMEMBERED BY THOSE WHO SERVED BESIDE HIM. IF IT WASN’T FOR HIS MENTORSHIP, I WOULDN’T BE IN MY ROLE WITH THE MILITARY, YOU KNOW, RIGHT NOW. SO, YOU KNOW, ULTIMATELY, I OWE HIM, YOU KNOW, A HUGE DEBT THAT I CAN’T REPAY. NOW, UNFORTUNATELY.
