Video shared around the country shows a Fremont student being hit by a car outside Fremont High School while protesting Immigration and Customs Enforcement.The Fremont Police Department issued several citations Wednesday in connection with the protest and the crash. A Fremont City Council member who represents the area said the incident was “isolated” and not an accurate reflection of the community.”As a community, we’re better than this,” said Jeff Peterson, Fremont city councilmember for Ward 1. “Things got out of hand, and of course, they’re kids.”Witnesses said a red car drove around the protest and eventually displayed a Trump flag on the back of the vehicle. Peterson cautioned against drawing conclusions based solely on video.”When you see things on video, you don’t get the whole picture,” he said.Previous coverage: Fremont police locate juvenile driver accused of being involved in hit-and-run crash that injured studentThe driver’s sister, Kristan Harris, told KETV last week that the driver was scared because people were surrounding the car.”You’re a teenage boy, and people are coming at you, and may or may not be throwing things at you or yelling things at you,” Harris said.Councilman Peterson said the situation was upsetting on multiple levels.”It’s grieving to hear that the kids were disrespectful to law enforcement,” Peterson said. “It’s grieving to see that they jumped off the sidewalk and mobbed this poor guy in the car.”Police cited the driver for “leaving the scene.” The girl who was hit was cited for being in the street.”Nobody was killed. That’s great,” Peterson said. “The girl had minor injuries. I’m glad it wasn’t anything more serious than that.”The adult and one of the other minors were cited for “criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.” The last two minors were cited for “obstructing a police officer and disorderly conduct.””So many good things,” Peterson said, talking about the City of Fremont. “And then this is what makes the news.”Next Monday, the school will hold its monthly board meeting.
