As classroom violence continues to rise in Iowa, two bills have been passed in the House and Senate to give educators more authority to respond to disruptive behavior. Lawmakers on both sides agreed that action is necessary.”It’s about respect for the teachers’ right to teach, the respect for every student’s right to learn in a safe, focused environment,” said State Sen. Kerry Gruenhagen.”Too many educators have been hurt on the job physically, emotionally because the system did not respond quickly or clearly enough with serious behavioral issues,” said State Sen. Molly Donahue.The Senate bill will require schools to adopt discipline policies, while the House bill mandates that administrators and teachers meet with a student before they can return to class.
