In court, prosecutors said a family member told police the dog had been abused for hours before it was shot.

“Family there told police the father had been abusing the dog all day and then had shot,” prosecutor Jordan Klein said.

Simpson’s attorney delivered a different series of events. Defense counsel Kathleen Babcock called it an act of self-defense.

“In regard to the incident, if you can see his hand, he reports that he was bit and the dog actually went after his child,” Babcock said.

Court documents said officers also found other bloody weapons in the home.

“In the basement of the home was found a trail of blook leading to the kennel, [and] near the kennel was a paddle and hammer,” Klein said.

Simpson is also charged with having a gun when he wasn’t supposed to because he is a prior convicted felon. Klein listed charges in court including domestic assault and theft by receiving.

Officers found a second gun in the house, but it was not registered to Simpson or anyone else in the home. The gun’s owner lives several blocks away and he said he didn’t know it was missing or who took it.

A judge set bond at $50,000 and scheduled a preliminary hearing for March 16.
