‘Mavericks win!’: UNO women’s basketball knocks off North Dakota in opening round of Summit League Tournament

BACK OPEN. THE CAUSE REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION. THE FUTURE FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA OMAHA IS GROWING BRIGHTER, AND STARTING NEXT YEAR, THE UNIVERSITY IS CAPITALIZING ON THAT GROWTH BY OPTING INTO A HOUSE CASE SETTLEMENT TO PAY STUDENT ATHLETES. THIS ALL COMES ON THE HEELS OF THE BOARD OF REGENTS APPROVING A $67.5 MILLION NEW ATHLETIC FACILITY, PROJECT. KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN’S EDDIE MESSEL SAT DOWN WITH UNO’S ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AND CHANCELLOR. HE HAS MORE ON UNO’S FUTURE AND A STORY YOU’LL ONLY SEE HERE ON KETV. UNO HAS SEEN TREMENDOUS ATHLETIC SUCCESS OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS TO DANCING IN MARCH MADNESS, TO A CINDERELLA RUN FOR SOFTBALL CRUNCH TO RIGHT FIELD, OR THE CONTINUED SUCCESS ON THE ICE FOR MAVS HOCKEY. ALL SETTING UNO UP TO COMPETE WITH DIVISION ONE UNIVERSITIES AROUND THE COUNTRY. 2627 ACADEMIC YEAR WAS THE IDEAL ENTRANCE POINT FOR UNO TO OPT INTO TERMS OF SETTLEMENT. SO WHAT’S OPTING INTO REVENUE SHARING LOOK LIKE? UNO ATHLETIC DIRECTOR ADRIAN DAO SAYS HE SEPARATES IT INTO THREE BUCKETS MORE SCHOLARSHIPS PER SPORT, EDUCATED RELATED BENEFITS AND THE THIRD BEING INSTITUTIONAL NIL, ALLOWING THE UNIVERSITY TO DIRECTLY PAY STUDENT ATHLETES. WE FEEL REALLY GOOD WHERE WE ARE. WE ENTER THIS NEW ERA FOR COLLEGE ATHLETICS, INCLUDING UNO, WITH CONFIDENCE, UNDERSTANDING. NOT ONLY CAN WE DO THIS, BUT WE’RE GOING TO DO IT EFFICIENTLY AND WE’RE GOING TO DO EVERYTHING WE CAN TO POSITION OUR STUDENT ATHLETES AND COACHES AND SPORT PROGRAMS TO BE COMPETITIVELY SUCCESSFUL BASED ON THE RESOURCES WE’RE PROVIDING. OPTING INTO THE TERMS OF THE SETTLEMENT IS JUST A SNIPPET OF THE WHOLE PICTURE FOR THE FUTURE OF UNO. THEY ARE ALSO BUILDING A $67.5 MILLION TRAINING FACILITY, INCLUDING A NEW BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL CLUBHOUSE. YOU GOT THAT NEW FACILITY COMING IN, I GUESS. TAKE ME THROUGH THAT PROCESS. AND WHAT PEOPLE CAN EXPECT OUT OF THAT PROJECT ONCE IT’S ALL WRAPPED UP AND SAID AND DONE. WE HAVE SOME INCREDIBLE ASSETS TO SELL. YOU KNOW, OUR COACHING STAFF GOING TO A GREAT INSTITUTION, AN INCREDIBLE CITY. CERTAINLY THE FACILITY INVESTMENTS WE’VE MADE, THOSE ARE GOING TO BE PARTS OF THE REASONS STUDENT ATHLETES DECIDE TO ATTEND UNL. SO WE NEED TO CONTINUE TO MAKE THIS A BROAD DECISION BASED PACKAGE, NOT NECESSARILY JUST BECAUSE OF WHAT WE’RE ABLE TO DO FINANCIALLY. CHANCELLOR JOANNE LEE SAYS THESE FUTURE INVESTMENTS AREN’T JUST A POSITIVE FOR ATHLETICS, SAYING THE SUCCESS ON THE FIELD AND THE COURT HAS GENERATED CURIOSITY. WE WANT TO CONVERT AND CAPITALIZE THAT KIND OF CURIOSITY INTO A HIGHER EDUCATION JOURNEY FOR MANY OF OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS. SO I’M BEYOND EXCITED ABOUT THIS. SPORTS FOSTERS COMMUNITY, A COMMUNITY THAT UNO PLANS TO CONTINUE TO BUILD. WE BELIEVE HIGHER EDUCATION SHOULD BE OF HIGH QUALITY, SHOULD BE AFFORDABLE, SHOULD BE ACCESSIBLE. AND BY THE WAY, ON A THURSDAY NIGHT YOU CAN COME AND WATCH OUR WOMEN’S BASKETBALL, RIGHT? THIS IS HOW WE MAKE OUR COMMUNITY. CERTAINLY THE NEXT CHAPTER OF OUR CAPITAL FOOTPRINT. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, THIS OPPORTUNITY IS GOING TO HAVE A TREMENDOUS IMPACT ON OMAHA ATHLETICS MOVING FORWARD. I CERTAINLY THINK IT CREATES A SUSTAINABLE, SUCCESSFUL PATHWAY FOR THE DIVISION ONE LEVEL FOR UNL. THE FUTURE OF COLLEGE SPORTS AND THE NCAA LANDSCAPE MAY BE UNKNOWN. HOWEVER, THE FUTURE IS NOT. WHY NOT UNL? WE’VE GOT SOME THINGS GOING ON AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, THEY ARE WINNING AND WE ARE MAKING DECISIONS TO PROTECT THAT INTEREST OF THEIR ABILITY T
