Nebraska Supreme Court rules case against teenager charged with murder will stay in adult court
The Nebraska Supreme Court affirmed a Court of Appeals decision to keep a teenage murder suspect’s case in adult court. 16-year-old Stephen D’Amore is facing first-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony charges in Lancaster County. D’Amore is accused in the stabbing death of Xavian Sawyer in Lincoln in 2024. The suspect was 14 years old at the time of the alleged crime. His defense team filed to have the case moved to juvenile court, but the motion was denied in December 2024. D’Amore’s lawyers appealed, but a Court of Appeals agreed with the district court’s decision to keep the case in adult felony court. The state supreme court said it found no error in that ruling.
