The EPIC Option petition initiative is on pause for 2026. According to a post on the group’s website, projections indicated that it would not collect enough signatures by the deadline, July 1. EPIC option seeks to eliminate income, property and inheritance taxes in Nebraska, and replace them with a consumption tax. The group failed to collect enough signatures to get the proposal on the 2024 ballot. The group’s president, Steve Jessen, said Monday’s announcement does not mean the end of their efforts.”It marks a reset and a stronger path forward with the launch of EPIC Option 3.0,” wrote Jessen. Jessen said they will restart for 2028. He said that, since 1966, no petition campaign has successfully gathered enough signatures using only volunteers. The group will only use paid circulators and is looking to raise $1.86 million for that change.
