The Republic of Korea joined the U.S. Marine Corps Thursday to honor a Nebraska Korean War veteran. Cpl. Rex Gruber, of Union, Nebraska, was awarded a medal, flag and certification during a ceremony at Offutt Air Force Base. Gruber served in the Marine Corps from 1948 to 1953. He was wounded three times during his deployment to Korea, including being shot in his foot. Gruber said the bullet shattered and is still in his foot today. Gruber earned two Purple Heart Medals for his service. “I feel real great, and a lot of honor to be here,” Gruber said. “I am very proud to be in the Marines.”In a letter read aloud during the ceremony, Lt. Gen. Jaeyuel Park, commander of the Republic of Korea Strategic Command, wrote that the country would never forget the debt of gratitude owed to Gruber.”Your life itself embodies the very values of devotion and honor that the U.S. military aspires to uphold,” Park wrote. Gruber also served with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department before retiring as a captain.
