State senators ask their colleagues to change Nebraska laws regarding immigration enforcement. The Judiciary Committee heard five bills seeking changes to identification, partnerships with local enforcement and community access.State Sen. Margo Juarez had two bills up for committee hearing Friday. First, she addressed them to a crowd of American Civil Liberties Union members in the state capitol.”I wanted to bring legislation that would be rooted in preventing the chaos our federal government is ensuing,” Juarez said.LB 906 requires law enforcement to clearly show faces and badge numbers. She said this was because of recent actions by masked officers during immigration operations in other states.”Masking during routine operations erodes the trust because it creates a perception of fear,” Juarez said.Her other bill, LB 907, prevents officers from entering safe spaces like hospitals, schools and churches. It’s a policy she said was enforced at the federal level, but isn’t anymore.”With the Trump administration rolling back that policy, I knew it was important to bring this to the state level,” Juarez said.State Sen. Dunixi Guereca’s bill, LB 881, requires all law enforcement partnerships with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to be approved by legislators first.”To divert them from their mission of providing safe streets for our neighbors should require transparency, should require an open dialogue with the very communities that they serve,” Guereca said.Dozens showed up to voice arguments and share their views on these bills. Public comment went on for hours. The five bills received hundreds of online comments, both for and against.The committee still needs to vote to advance all these bills before they head for floor for debate.
