NEWSWATCH SEVEN SKYCAM NETWORK. WELL, THE DURHAM MUSEUM IS HOSTING THE FINAL SHOWING OF THE SMITHSONIAN’S EXHIBITION THE NEGRO MOTORIST GREEN BOOK. IT EXPLORES THE TRAVEL GUIDE THAT HELPED BLACK AMERICANS NAVIGATE SAFELY DURING THE JIM CROW ERA. NOW THEY’VE CREATED A SPEAKER AND ART SERIES AND HERE TO TELL US ALL ABOUT IT IS DANA MURRAY FROM NORTH OMAHA. MUSIC AND ARTS AND PRESTON LOVE JUNIOR. HOW ARE YOU? THANKS FOR HAVING US. YES. THANK YOU BOTH FOR BEING HERE. SO THIS SERIES HIGHLIGHTS THE LOCAL HISTORY CONNECTED TO THE GREEN BOOK. EXPLAIN WHAT PEOPLE CAN EXPECT. DO YOU WANT TO START? YEAH, SURE. WELL, WE SURELY CAN EXPECT A GOOD LESSON IN CULTURE. A GOOD LESSON IN HISTORY. A GOOD LESSON IN THE GOOD AND THE BAD AT THE SAME TIME. THE GREEN BOOK WAS THE GOOD. THE REASON FOR THE GREEN BOOK WAS BAD. IT WAS THE RESULT OF SEVERE SEGREGATION AND DISCRIMINATORY PRACTICES WHICH FORCED. THOSE WHO TRAVELED. AFRICAN AMERICANS WHO TRAVELED THE COUNTRY, EVEN OMAHA. BUT SURELY OMAHA AND SOUTH OF OMAHA. WHERE CAN WE EAT SAFELY? WHERE CAN WE STAY SAFELY? WHERE CAN WE COMMERCE AND ENJOY OURSELVES FOR LEISURE SAFELY? IT SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN, BUT IT WAS. AND SO THE GREEN BOOK PROVIDED A MAP, A FRAMEWORK WHERE YOU COULD GO AND DO ALL THOSE THINGS SAFELY. IT IT PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE EVOLUTION OF BOTH CULTURES. HOW SPECIAL IS IT TO HAVE THIS EXHIBITION DURING BLACK HISTORY MONTH? I THINK IT’S EXTREMELY SIGNIFICANT. ANYTIME YOU CAN HIGHLIGHT BLACK CULTURE, THE LEGACY THAT THAT BUILT A LOT OF WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW TODAY. YOU KNOW, MUSIC, YOU KNOW, WHAT I’LL BE SPEAKING ON IS JUST THE POWER OF MUSIC IN THE COMMUNITY AND HOW IT HAS BEEN THE BACKBONE OF THE CULTURE SINCE OF, SINCE ITS EXISTENCE. SO TALKING ABOUT THAT, LETTING EVERYONE KNOW THAT WE ARE STILL DOING BIG THINGS AND OUR EYE IS ON BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS, I THINK IS IMPORTANT. WILL THERE BE A DIFFERENT GUEST SPEAKER AT EACH EVENT? YES THERE WILL. I’LL BE SPEAKING. PRESTON WILL BE SPEAKING. ERIC EWING. WELL, WHO ELSE IS SPEAKING? I DON’T REMEMBER, BUT. YEAH. WHO CARES? IT’S JUST ME AND YOU, ERIC. BUT IT’S. I WANT TO SAY, JUST RECENTLY WE HAD THE GRAMMYS AND ALL THE GLORY AND THE GLITTER OF THE OF THE GRAMMYS, BUT MUSIC AND THE PERFORMERS, BEYOND MUSIC. BUT MUSIC. THAT STORY NEEDS TO BE TOLD. YEAH, IT HASN’T ALWAYS BEEN JUST THE GLAMOR. AND HOW CAN PEOPLE REGISTER? I’M NOT SURE ABOUT THAT EITHER. I DO THINK IT’S AN ONLINE, AND I THINK THEY GO TO DURHAM MUSEUM’S WEBSITE OR FACEBO
