An Omaha city councilman is considering an ordinance regulating short-term rentals.City councilman Ron Hug called a “responsive neighborhood meeting” Monday to gather input on the proposed ordinance. Hug said the proposal comes after an overdose at a short-term rental over the weekend. An incident report said Omaha police were called to a home near 52nd and A streets for a report of an overdose Saturday around 8:30 p.m. The report said Omaha Fire and Rescue staff were performing life-saving measures, but the man died at the scene. “When the neighbors come to me with complaints, there’s nothing the city can do,” Hug said. He cited a state law prohibiting cities from banning short-term housing rentals.”They’re feeling helpless right now. They have an issue in their neighborhood, and there’s nothing the city could do to help them,” Hug said. Hug suggested crafting an ordinance based on Lincoln’s short-term rental laws. He said that the ordinance requires short-term rentals to be licensed. Hug said no ordinance has been introduced at the council yet, but he asked the city’s legal department to draft something.
