It was a double dose of hockey for many Lancers fans on Sunday.After they watched Team USA claim gold Sunday morning, the Lancers delivered a win of their own in the evening, 3-0, as they hosted the Waterloo, Iowa, Black Hawks.Lifelong Lancers fan Beth Simoens said even those who typically don’t follow hockey were reaching out to her with excitement during the gold medal match. Lancers fan Dylan Cochrane said the USA’s win brought him “pride.” “What a display by both teams,” Lancers General Manager Marc Fritsche told KETV. “It was incredible. Just back-and-forth hockey.” He said the game inspires the Lancers’ young players to aspire to represent their own countries.”We have kids from all over the world here,” he said.While no former Lancers were on Team USA, former Lancer Erik Haula helped Finland win bronze. The Nashville Predators forward scored two goals in the third-place game. Lancers coach Ron Fogarty, who is Canadian but later earned his U.S. citizenship, expressed his support for both teams.”Forty-six years ago was the miracle,” Fogarty said, referring to when the USA shocked the world and defeated the Soviet Union. Fogarty said, like that game, “This game hopefully will spark another great generation of players to come.” Team USA held up the jersey of late NHL star Johnny Gaudreau after the win. Both Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, brothers, died in a car crash the night before they were to attend their sisters’ wedding. Matthew Gaudreau was an Omaha Lancer. Colin and Deb Andersen, Matthew’s host family, said they know Team USA was playing for the Gaudreau brothers. They said they were thrilled to see them win and honor the family.
