NOT CHARGED BECAUSE OF HIS AGE. CLEANUP IS STILL UNDERWAY AFTER SUNDAY’S PILEUP ON INTERSTATE 80. AROUND 40 CARS WERE INVOLVED WHEN WHITEOUT AND SLICK CONDITIONS HAD DRIVERS LOSING CONTROL. KETV NEWSWATCH 7 AARON HEGARTY JOINS US LIVE ALONG I-80 WITH THIS INVESTIGATION AND WHAT DRIVERS WERE REALLY UP AGAINST. ERIN? YEAH, THE CASS COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS THAT SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE SENT TO LINCOLN HOSPITALS. C-H-I SAINT ELIZABETH SAYS THEY RECEIVED 19 PATIENTS AND ALL HAVE BEEN RELEASED. AND BRIAN HEALTH, THEY RECEIVED FOUR. TWO OF THEM HAVE BEEN RELEASED AND TWO ARE IN FAIR CONDITION. TOW TRUCKS ARE STILL IN THE PROCESS OF CLEARING VEHICLES NEAR I-80. WESTBOUND EXIT. 420 JARED DRESSMAN WAS THERE WHEN HE SAW TWO CARS TURN INTO A 30 TO 40 CAR PILEUP. HE WAS ON HIS WAY BACK FROM AN EMS CONFERENCE IN KEARNEY. MYSELF AND A LOT OF THE GREENWOOD FIRE AND RESCUE MEMBERS. WE WERE RUNNING THROUGH THE MEDIAN, JUST TRYING TO DODGE VEHICLES ON BOTH SIDES. HE ASSUMED HIS SUV, THE ONE HE BOUGHT FROM HIS LATE GRANDMA’S ESTATE LAST WEEK, WOULD HAVE SOME DAMAGE THAT DIDN’T HAVE A SINGLE SCRATCH ON IT. NOW, IT ALSO HELPED THAT GREENWOOD HAD A APPROXIMATELY 40 OR 60,000 POUND ENGINE PARKED RIGHT BEHIND ME TO ACT AS A BLOCKER, BUT MY GRANDMOTHER WAS DEFINITELY THERE, KEEPING ME SAFE. TECHNICALLY, IT WAS TWO PILE UPS. KEPT GOING FOR A LITTLE WHILE, JUST WHEN WE THOUGHT THINGS. WE HAD THINGS UNDER CONTROL. OUR DISPATCH WAS OVERWHELMED FOR DISPATCH CENTERS WERE INVOLVED. CASS COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE CHIEF DEPUTY MATTHEW WATSON SAYS THAT MEANT DEPUTIES MADE CALLS. DISPATCH NORMALLY, WOULD. WE ALL FIND OURSELVES BEING VERY CREATIVE AND LEANING ON EACH OTHER AND. AND THAT DEFINITELY WAS HAPPENING YESTERDAY. ALL IN ALL, THERE WERE 14 OTHER AGENCIES THAT ASSISTED THE CASS COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE, MANY OF THEM VOLUNTEER FIRE AND RESCUE DEPARTMENTS. BOTH THE CASS COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE AND ASHLAND PD, K9 UNIT WERE HIT. EVERYBODY WAS OKAY IN THOSE. IT’S JUST PROPERTY DAMAGE, WATSON SAYS. THEY BELIEVE IN LUCK AND TRY TO MAKE THEIR OWN. WE WERE BLESSED YESTERDAY AND IT WAS. GOD HAD THINGS IN OUR FAVOR SO. WATSON SAYS THE CASS COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE ALSO HAD AT LEAST SIX OTHER INCIDENTS TO DEAL WITH YESTERDAY, INCLUDING A DUI ARREST. BACK TO YOU. JU

Jared Dressman was returning from an EMS conference in Kearney when he saw two cars involved in a crash amid the winter weather.”There were no first responders on scene yet,” he told KETV. “So, like any first responder, I stopped to check for injuries.”He said Greenwood Fire and Rescue pulled up behind him, and they checked if there were any injuries.”I was just about to get ready to leave when there was a secondary collision,” he said. “Then we were approaching the vehicles, and then more vehicles started sliding and hitting. At that point, vehicles were coming at us pretty fast. Dressman said he and Greenwood first responders found themselves “running through the median, just trying to dodge vehicles on both sides.”He then waited the incident out from the safety of a Greenwood ambulance.”I can’t give enough kudos to Greenwood Fire and Rescue and all of the mutual aid partners that responded. All of the deputies, state patrol. Once the interstate got shut down and it was safe to start assessing the situation, everyone worked together, and it was just amazing to see,” Dressman said.
