YEAH, MADDIE, THE SEVEN YEAR OLD BLACK LAB, WORKS AS AN EXPLOSIVES DETECTIVE K-9 AT EPPLEY AIRFIELD. HE’S TRAINING HERE IN OMAHA IS WHAT PREPARES HIM AND HIS HANDLER FOR MAJOR NATIONAL EVENTS LIKE THE SUPER BOWL. WHILE ALL EYES ARE ON THE FIELD, OMAHA POLICE K-9 DOMINIC IS HARD AT WORK. WE’VE BEEN LOANED OUT TO SUPER BOWL. WE ARE WORKING AT DIFFERENT VARIATIONS. ASSIGNMENTS HERE FOR DIFFERENT ENTITIES THAT HAVE REQUESTED IT. TODAY WE’RE WORKING THE TRANSITS RIGHT OUTSIDE THE STADIUM AFTER A CROSS COUNTRY ROAD TRIP. DOMINIC AND OFFICER DAVE STASKIEWICZ SPENT THEIR WEEK WITH FOOTBALL FANS IN SAN FRANCISCO. WE DO A VARIETY OF TYPES OF SWEEPS FOR EXPLOSIVES JUST TO MAKE SURE ANY PLACE THAT PEOPLE ARE GOING, THEY’VE BEEN SWEPT TO MAKE SURE THERE’S NO DEVICES IN THAT AREA. SNIFFING OUT DANGER IS DOMINIC’S DAILY ROUTINE. HE’S BEEN ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AS PART OF THE GIG. I DID THE SUPER BOWL TWO YEARS AGO IN PHOENIX, AND HE’S ALSO DONE THE LAST TWO INAUGURATIONS. BUT OFFICER STASKIEWICZ TELLS ME THERE’S STILL NEW THINGS THEY HAD TO GET USED TO BEFORE THE BIG GAME. WE DON’T USUALLY WORK ON TRANSIT RAIL SYSTEMS, SO IT’S JUST GETTING THEM USED TO THAT A LITTLE BIT. AND TRYING TO LIKE, LIKE ANYTHING WE DO WITH THEM AND WE HAVE TO TURN IT INTO A GAME. HE HAS TO HAVE HIS TOY AND HAVE FUN. SO WE GET TO EXPERIENCE A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS HERE THAT WE DON’T HAVE AT HOME. FOR DOMINIC, IT’S ALL FUN. WE’RE USED TO DOING LIKE COLLEGE WORLD SERIES. It’s not the first time Dominic has traveled the country to sniff out problems, however. “I did the Super Bowl two years ago in Phoenix, and he’s also done the last two inaugurations,” Staskiewicz said.While all eyes are on the field, Omaha police K-9 Dominic is hard at work. “We do a variety of types of sweeps for explosives, just to make sure any place that people are going, they’ve been swept to make sure there’s not no devices in that area,” Staskiewicz said.
