The partial government shutdown entered its fifth day Wednesday with Democrats and the White House still far from reaching a deal on immigration enforcement reforms. A source told Hearst Television that Democrats submitted their latest counterproposal to the White House on Monday night, but a White House official said the administration and Democrats remain far from a deal. The latest proposal has not been made public, leaving many questions about what exactly the Trump administration is rejecting. Democrats want Department of Homeland Security officers to obtain judicial warrants before entering private property and seek improvements in warrant procedures and standards. They also demand that agents remove their masks, a change largely opposed by Republicans who argue it could put officers in harm’s way. “Our view is that ICE agents should be conducting themselves like every other law enforcement agency in the country,” Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic Minority Leader, said. “Police officers don’t wear masks, county sheriffs don’t wear masks and state troopers don’t wear masks. We haven’t been provided a shred of justification from this administration as to why ICE agents are conducting themselves differently.”Some Republican leaders worry that taking masks off ICE agents could put them in harm’s way.“There’s a lot of vicious people out there, and they’ll take a picture of your face, and the next thing you know, your children or your wife or your husband are being threatened at home,” Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C. said. “That’s just the reality of the world that we’re in.”Additionally, Democrats want to require immigration agents to wear body cameras, a mandate generally agreed upon by the White House and GOP leaders.Reaching a deal this week remains unlikely. The Capitol is quiet today and will remain that way for the rest of the week, as Congress is in recess until Feb. 23.Keep watching for the latest from the Washington News Bureau:
