A new bill proposed in this year’s Nebraska Legislature looks to undo federal work requirements for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program beneficiaries.LB734 wants to require SNAP benefits to be reinstated for veterans who are no longer working.Currently, the Department of Health and Human Services excludes the unemployed veterans from receiving benefits, due to the language of a federal law passed with the “One Big Beautiful Bill” budget passed through Congress in 2025.The bill also looks to bring benefits back for both those experiencing homelessness and those who are former foster youth between the ages of 19 and 24.Nebraska state senator Megan Hunt from District 8 is in support of the bill, saying, “The least we can do is remove a completely new barrier to meeting of their most basic needs. Food. They deserve food.”The bill was heard by the committee Thursday morning and still requires a vote from the committee before it faces additional steps to become state law.
