From the Food Network to the food bank, Chef Aarón Sánchez will judge Food Bank for the Heartland’s culinary cookoff.”I’m here with like-minded people that love to make sure that people are fed and hunger is solved,” Sánchez said.Before the big competition, Sánchez got a tour of Heartland’s new facility at 84th and L streets. “What I love is that they’re thinking about the future,” Sánchez said, “Just the efficiency and the thoughtfulness that is involved in the design of this building.”Participating in the contest are local chefs Joel Hassanali, Ben Maides and Paul and Jessica Urban. They joined the building tour and spent the time learning about the food bank and gauging their judge for the evening.”I’m not going to go a little Gordon Ramsay out there, but I look for the beauty in all things and positives,” Sánchez said.”He’s going to be really great, and I think he’s really going to put the screws to the competing chefs tonight,” Brian Barks, CEO of Food Bank for the Heartland, said.From Texas to New York, Sánchez has seen and worked to alleviate food insecurity. Now, he’s bringing attention to the heartland.”The thing that I really appreciate about Aarón, too, is he gets what we do and why we do it and why it’s such an incredible need,” Barks said.Sánchez said this opportunity fits right in with his beliefs.”Making sure that people in this area and adjoining counties and adjoining states like Iowa are taken care of and have sustainable food,” Sánchez said.Tickets are sold out, and seats will be packed to see Chef Sánchez and the competition.
