Chef Joel Hassanali is bringing Caribbean flavors to the Midwest as he competes in the Food Bank for the Heartland’s 2026 Celebrity Chef Competition. He is preparing to showcase his culinary skills for a good cause.”This is actually the Trini Fish named after where I’m from,” Hassanali said. He said his Caribbean roots are embedded in his life’s work, and his love for food began at a young age. “This is dear to me because of the Caribbean flavors,” Hassanali said. “A lot of the flavors from Trinidad with some grilled pineapple. It speaks home,” he said.As a chef at Salted Edge and Pivot, Hassanali is known for his passion and high expectations. “So me as a chef? Very, very passionate. I care about what I do, but also very demanding and I have high expectations,” he said.Despite Nebraska being landlocked, Hassanali emphasizes the importance of fresh seafood in his dishes. “I know it’s hard to get it here in Nebraska, but we do a lot of research and try to get it as fresh as we can,” he said.Hassanali takes pride in each plate that leaves his kitchen. “So one of my biggest accomplishments as a chef is this having the opportunity to open Salted Edge and then Pivot a year and a half later,” he said.As he competes in the Food Bank for the Heartland’s Celebrity Chef 2026, Hassanali is excited to see chefs come together for a good cause. “Seeing chefs coming together and cooking for a good cause, I think it’s something amazing, especially for The Food Bank for the Heartland,” he said.
