YEAH, THE NEBRASKA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SAYS PLOW DRIVERS ARE STILL CLEANING THE ROADS. KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN’S MADISON CORRALES JOINS US LIVE AFTER SPEAKING WITH CREWS ABOUT. AND THE CITY ABOUT THE LINGERING WORK AHEAD. MADISON. PAWNEE. WE ARE LIVE AT NEAR 75TH AND I-80 OVERLOOKING THE INTERSTATE, AND YOU CAN SEE THE ROADS ARE LOOKING PRETTY CLEAR. ALL THINGS TO END. CREWS ARE WORKING DAY AND NIGHT TO CLEAR OFF THE STREETS TO ENSURE SAFE COMMUTE FOR YOU ON YOUR FRIDAY AFTERNOON. THE SNOW CAME HARD AND FAST. I SAW THE SNOW SHOWERS COMING DOWN AS I WAS LOOKING OUT MY OFFICE WINDOW, I SAID, OH BOY, THIS IS GOING TO BE INTERESTING. GETTING HOME. OMAHA PUBLIC WORKS SAYS WHILE WORKERS WERE ON TOP OF CLEARING THE ROADS, THERE’S ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT. WE’RE LOOKING AT SOME OF OUR APPLICATION RATES JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF SALT GOING DOWN. I THINK WE COULD HAVE ACHIEVED SOME BETTER MELTING THROUGH THE NIGHT. NEBRASKA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION’S DISTRICT TWO COVERAGE AREA HAD CREWS WORKING ALL NIGHT. SOME EVEN PUTTING IN DOUBLE SHIFTS TO KEEP THE INTERSTATE CLEAR. THEY WERE THEY WERE EXCITED TO GET OUT AND AND TACKLE THE SNOWSTORM. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANAGER JIM LAUGHLIN SAYS IT WAS WORST CASE SCENARIO TO HAVE THE SNOW DUMPED DURING RUSH HOUR. THEY WERE WORRIED THAT THE INTERSTATE WOULD BE SLICK FOR ALL THE PEOPLE LEAVING ALL AT ONCE. SO WE WENT DOWN THERE AND COVERED THAT. AND SP TELLS KETV IN A STATEMENT. TROOPERS HANDLED WELL OVER 200 WEATHER RELATED INCIDENTS, NOTING THAT EVEN THOUGH THE FORECAST DOESN’T INCLUDE MORE SNOW IN THE NEAR FUTURE, THE POTENTIAL FOR REFREEZE IS THERE. THE SNOW WILL STICK AROUND. EVERYTHING THAT MELTS ON THE PAVEMENT IS GOING TO REFREEZE AT NIGHT, SO THAT’S SOMETHING TO KEEP IN MIND. AREAS THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN HAD GOOD TRACTION DURING THE DAY ON THE DRIVE MIGHT BE SLICK AT NIGHT. ‘Snow will stick around’: Winter blast is over, but road crews work continues on
The snow has ended, but crews remain hard at work.The Nebraska Department of Transportation said plow drivers are still cleaning the roads. NDOT crews are working to make sure the roads are safe for drivers headed home Friday afternoon.“The snow came hard and fast,” said Jim Laughlin, NDOT’s operation and maintenance manager for District 2.READ MORE: Significant snowfall reports from Thursday’s winter storm in Nebraska, Iowa “I saw the snow showers coming down, as I was looking out my office window, I said, ‘Oh boy, this is going to be interesting getting home,’” said Omaha Mayor John Ewing Jr.Omaha Public Works said while workers were on top of clearing the roads, there is always room for improvement.READ MORE: Winter storm to impact Omaha area Thursday“We’re looking at some of our application rates, just to make sure that we have the right amount of salt going down,” said City Engineer Austin Rowser. “I think we could have achieved some better melting through the night.”The Nebraska Department of Transportation’s District Two coverage area had crews working all night, with some punching in double shifts to keep the interstate clear.“They were excited to get out and to tackle the snowstorm,” Laughlin said, adding it was a worst-case scenario to have the snow dump during rush hour.“They were worried that the interstate would be slick for all the people leaving all at once,” Laughlin said. “So we went down there and covered that.”The Nebraska State Patrol told KETV in a statement that troopers handled “well over 200 weather-related incidents,” noting that, “even though the forecast doesn’t include more snow in the near future, the potential for refreeze is there.”Rowser adds a note of caution to this statement.“Snow will stick around. Everything that melts on the pavement is going to refreeze at night,” Rowser said. “So that’s something to keep in mind.
