President Donald Trump delivered the first State of the Union address of his second term, defending his record on the economy and attempting to persuade skeptical voters that the economy is stronger than many believe.”This is the golden age of America. When I last spoke in this chamber 12 months ago, I had just inherited a nation in crisis with a stagnant economy,” Trump said.Throughout his speech, Trump praised his immigration crackdown across the country and his push to preserve widespread tariffs, even after the Supreme Court struck down a large portion of them. He vowed to use “alternative” laws to impose the taxes on imports and said congressional action will not be necessary.Recent polls show the majority of Americans disapprove of the president’s work on the economy, but he didn’t dwell on efforts to lower the cost of living.According to the latest AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs poll, 62% of Americans disapprove of the way the president is handling his job. The survey also shows 39% of Americans approve of the way Trump is handling the economy.In an effort to tame electricity prices, Trump announced he will press technology companies involved in artificial intelligence to pay higher electricity rates in areas where their data centers are located.With respect to election integrity, Trump championed proposals to limit mail-in ballots and tighten voter identification rules through the SAVE America Act.Throughout the night, there were made-for-TV moments, including when the president invited the gold medal-winning U.S. Men’s Hockey team into the House chamber. The president also announced he would be awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Connor Hellebuyck, the team’s goaltender.Another moment that stood out was when Trump introduced Andrew Wolfe, a member of the National Guard. Wolfe was shot in November while patrolling the streets in Washington, D.C. Trump awarded Wolfe a Purple Heart. This was Wolfe’s first public appearance since that horrific day. One of the most contentious moments came when Trump warned about the dangers posed by immigrants, challenging Democrats to stand in solidarity, which they did not. “If you agree with this statement, then stand up and show your support.
