Trump vows more firepower, role in choosing next Iranian leader
As U.S. and Israeli forces continue against Iran, President Trump says the U.S. will be involved in selecting Iran’s next leader. The Pentagon also says it plans to increase military action against the country.
The Trump administration continues to send mixed messages about the U.S. goals for the ongoing war in Iran. In interviews with multiple news outlets on Thursday, President Donald Trump suggested the U.S. will be involved in selecting Iran’s next leader. In these interviews, he also ruled out late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s son, who’s emerged as a frontrunner for the spot.During an unrelated event at the White House, Trump said, “It’s going to be, I think, a great future and the United States will ensure that whoever leads the country next in Iran will not threaten America or its neighbors, Israel, anybody.”As recently as Wednesday, the White House tamped down suggestions one of the goals in Iran is regime change.Trump also marveled at the success of the U.S.’ mission against Iran so far. “We’re destroying more of Iran’s missile and drone capability every single hour, knocking them out like nobody thought was possible,” the president said. “They don’t know what’s happening. But we have the greatest military anywhere in the world.”The Pentagon released new video of American forces bombing an Iranian drone carrier at sea. Other video from Friday shows columns of smoke billowing into the air, following strikes in Iran’s capital, Tehran. With the war widening across the Middle East, Iran has vowed revenge and kept up retaliatory attacks on Israel and American allies in the region. The Pentagon has countered, saying most of Iran’s air defense and missile launchers have been destroyed. The Pentagon is promising a surge in action against Iran.”It’s more fighter squadrons, it’s more capabilities, it’s more defensive capabilities, and it’s more bomber pulses more frequently,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in a news conference on Thursday evening. “The amount of firepower over Iran and over Tehran is about to surge dramatically.”Meanwhile, the State Department confirmed it has helped facilitate the safe return of over 20,000 Americans from the Middle East since the war started, including 8,500 on Wednesday alone. On Thursday evening, the House voted down a resolution to require congressional approval for President Trump to take further action in Iran. It failed mostly along party lines, with two Republicans voting for it and four Democrats against it. A similar measure failed in the Senate earlier this week. Even if the resolutions passed, they would not have survived a likely presidential veto. Watch the latest happening with the war in Iran:
