President Donald Trump fired Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem Thursday, marking the first major personnel shakeup of his second term. He made the announcement online, adding Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Oklahoma, would take over the role. Noem will continue to play a role in the Trump administration as part of the president’s “Shield of the Americas,” a multinational effort launching this weekend focused on foreign policy on the American continents. Thursday’s news is still considered a demotion for Noem.Noem supported and defended the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies that led to clashes between police and protesters in cities across the country. Polling suggests a majority of Americans are concerned about threats to the First Amendment rights of those protesters and the arrests of non-violent or non-criminal undocumented immigrants. This week, Noem faced back-to-back tough hearings on Capitol Hill where she defended a number of personal and professional scandals and backlash, even from some Republicans, over her role in slowed FEMA responses to natural disasters and her spending of taxpayer money, including a starring role in a $220 million anti-illegal immigration ad campaign.Mullin is one of the president’s biggest supporters in Congress. He will take over the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at the end of the month, with his likely first challenge on securing funding for DHS, which ran out three weeks ago, prompting the ongoing partial government shutdown. Mullin is the junior senator from Oklahoma and has been in the Senate for about three years. He also represented Oklahoma’s second district in the House for about 10 years. Before entering politics, he ran a plumbing business founded by his family, and in 2016, was inducted into the Oklahoma Wrestling Hall of Fame as an MMA fighter. More recently, during last month’s State of the Union address, Mullin was seen trying to grab a protest sign out of Texas Democrat Rep. Al Green’s hands.Mullin said the announcement of his appointment came quickly.”I’ve got to be honest with you, I wasn’t expecting the call but, super excited. And I’m more excited about and just ready to get started,” Mullin told reporters. “There’s a lot of work we can do to get the Department of Homeland Security working for the American people.”Watch the latest coverage on Trump’s cabinet shakeup:
