Two people are facing charges after police said they sped off in a car with a Massachusetts police officer inside. In January, Worcester police officers were conducting a property check when they noticed a man, later identified as John Slater, 23, of Worcester, behind the building near a car parked in the driveway. A woman, later identified as Sarah McMahon, 22, of Holden, was in the driver’s seat and another man was in the backseat. According to police, when officers asked McMahon why they were there, they noticed drugs and paraphernalia inside the car. After a series of questions from officers, police said Slater reached inside the car, which concerned officers as they believed he was trying to reach for a weapon. “John proceeded to turn the vehicle on from the passenger’s side. He put the vehicle in reverse and told the female to drive. She accelerated, putting the officer’s life in danger. The officer told the female driver to stop numerous times, and she did not comply,” Worcester police said in a statement sent to sister station WCVB. Worcester police released body camera footage of the incident, which showed the police officer inside the speeding car for nearly a minute.During that time, “Slater attempted to push the officer out of the vehicle. He also attempted to reach for the officer’s gun,” police said. The officer was able to turn the vehicle off after a struggle ensued. More officers arrived on scene, and both Slater and McMahon were arrested. Slater and McMahon are both facing assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery attempt to disarm a police officer and possession of a class B substance (crack cocaine), amongst a slew of other charges.
