Officials said around 10 p.m. Saturday, a large group of young people gathered to watch street racing and sideshows near 135th and F streets. A sideshow is a gathering of several cars doing illegal stunts, which can be dangerous for those watching.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office shared bystander video of a car doing donuts in an open parking lot near 135th and F streets. The young woman in a pink outfit was hit as the car was turning away from her.

Sheriff Aaron Hanson said, “She was injured at that car meet-up, sideshow,” and “went to the emergency room for care.” There is no update on her condition.

Hanson said the Community Action Team (CAT) learned of the activity through monitoring social media and tips.

“They’re a very transient group. They move from parking lot to parking lot,” Hanson said. “And this was the first major parking lot sideshow event of the year.”

Twenty-two-year-old Liam Barlow was arrested on several charges, including reckless driving, speeding, possession of a weapon and illegal substances, which makes having his firearm a felony. Investigators believe he hosted the event.

Two cars are impounded, but not the vehicle that hit the woman, officials said.

Authorities also cited and released a 17-year-old driver for reckless driving, as well as a 22-year-old bystander for unlawful presence at a sideshow.

“This is real life. Your child can lose their life, or they can take someone else’s life,” Hanson said. “They can land them in prison for decades. This is real. And we have to get a grip on it.”

He said showing off reckless driving online and playing realistic video games play a major role in the behavior.

“Take it to the track where it’s safe and it’s legal,” Hanson said.

Smart Gen Society’s outreach coordinator, which studies and educates about online safety, said posting videos showing reckless behavior online can be dangerous.

“There could be real consequences to this type of truant behavior that once again, their brain is so impulsive and they’re going to just do things in a split second, especially if they have an audience,” Suzie Fogarty said.

Investigators are still searching for the suspect who hit the young woman.

Investigators said you can call Crime Stoppers 402-444-STOP or the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at 402-444-6000 if you know anything.
