VNA shelter nursing program helps people experiencing homelessness

Nell Neal now spends her days preparing meals at New Visions Services, but just a little over a year ago, her life looked very different.”I was homeless. I was living in my car, and then my car got totaled. There went my car, and now I’m really homeless,” Neal recounted.Neal says she searched for shelters after that but struggled to find a women-only one, until she found Micah House. That is also where Neal met VNA shelter nurse Tracy Yandell.”The clients that we see, we meet them where they’re at. Having your mental health and good physical health helps you to be able to have a job,” Yandell said.Yandell gave Neal the help and care she needed to get back on track with medications while simultaneously providing companionship.”She’s like my friend, you know, (the nurses) care about other people. They make sure that your medicines and everything are straight, and it’s a good feeling to have someone on your side that knows your health situation,” Neal said of the VNA shelter nurses.Yandell has been a shelter nurse for 15 years.”I really wanted to help people, and I really like the VNA mission,” Yandell said.After seven months at Micah House, Neal was able to get her own apartment and a job as a prep cook at New Visions Homeless Services in Council Bluffs, Iowa.”(The job) came in the nick of time. It’s a good feeling to come as far as I’ve came since the beginning of last year,” Neal said.Visiting Nurse Association’s shelter program is a nonprofit.
