Nebraska launches Workforce Pell program, expanding federal aid for short-term job training
Metropolitan Community College is among the first schools in the nation offering eligible programs designed to prepare students for in-demand careers
OMAHA, Neb. —
For the first time, eligible Nebraskans can use federal Pell Grants to help pay for short-term workforce training programs, opening a new pathway into high-demand careers.
Gov. Jim Pillen joined state and education leaders Tuesday at Metropolitan Community College to announce Nebraska’s Workforce Pell program. The initiative expands federal Pell Grant eligibility beyond traditional college degree programs to approved noncredit workforce training.

Metro Community College is among the first institutions in the country to offer qualifying programs, including commercial driver’s license (CDL), pharmacy technician, phlebotomy technician and CompTIA certification training.
For Terrence Turner, who was released from prison less than a year ago, the new funding is making a career change possible.
“It’s a great opportunity for me to have this program available,” Turner said. “Being fresh out of prison and not having the resources and money to pay for this myself.”
State leaders say the grants are designed to help people quickly gain the skills needed for careers in industries facing worker shortages, including healthcare, manufacturing and transportation.
“It’s about meeting people where they are and helping them get where they want to go,” Pillen said.
The approved workforce programs last between eight and 15 weeks and must meet federal requirements for completion and job placement rates before qualifying for Workforce Pell funding.
Turner, who is working part-time while earning his CDL, said he would not have been able to attend without the financial assistance.
“If I had to pay for it, I don’t think I would even be going to school,” he said.
State officials say they plan to expand Workforce Pell opportunities to additional colleges across Nebraska as more programs meet federal eligibility requirements.
