An Omaha fire captain has died from complications with cancer at the age of 50.Capt. John Olson served on the Omaha Fire Department for over two decades in a variety of roles, including his most recent role as a fire inspector in the Fire Prevention Division.”Captain Olson dedicated his life to serving others, both within this department and throughout the Omaha community. He was a respected leader, a mentor, and a friend to many. On behalf of the Omaha Fire Department, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. We will honor his service and carry forward the example he set for all of us,” Omaha Fire Chief Kathy Bossman said in a statement.”Captain Olson was known for his steady leadership, professionalism, and commitment to both his crew and our community. The firefighters’ union also took to social media to pay tribute to Olson, saying, “Captain Olson served the citizens of Omaha with courage, dedication, and unwavering commitment to public safety. His loss is deeply felt not only within our department, but throughout the community he so proudly protected.”The union referred to Olson’s passing as a “line-of-duty death” because of his cancer diagnosis. Olson is survived by his wife and their three children as well as extended family, friends, and his brothers and sisters whom he served alongside.
