Nebraska men’s basketball defeats Troy to earn historic NCAA tournament win

LEADER KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN AT FOUR. AND WE START WITH BIG RED ZONE COVERAGE. HUSKER MEN’S BASKETBALL WINS ITS FIRST NCAA TOURNAMENT GAME. THEY DEFEATED TROY IN THE FIRST ROUND IN OKLAHOMA CITY. THANKS FOR JOINING US. I’M JULIE CORNELL AND I’M QUANECIA FRASER TEAM COVERAGE NOW. CONNOR SCHMIDT IS IN WEST OMAHA CELEBRATING THE WIN WITH SOME FANS AT CUNNINGHAM’S. BUT FIRST, LET’S GO TO OMAHA SPORTS LEADER LVIV IN OKLAHOMA CITY FOR THE HIGHLIGHTS. ANDY KENDEIGH AND LAUREN MICHELSON JOINING US NOW. HEY GUYS. HEY, YOU. HEY, JULIE. YOU KNOW, IT’S NOT OFTEN YOU GET TO SEE HISTORY, BUT LAURA AND I ACTUALLY GOT TO SEE IT IN PERSON. THEY DID IT. THEY FINALLY DID IT. AFTER EIGHT LOSSES IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT. NEBRASKA FINALLY WON AN NCAA TOURNAMENT GAME, KNOCKING OFF TROY BY THE FINAL OF 7647. GOT TO MENTION THE CROWD HERE. PROBABLY ABOUT 15,000 OR SO HUSKER FANS. THEY WERE EVERYWHERE AND THEY REALLY MADE THIS INTO PINNACLE BANK, ARENA SOUTH, AND YOU COULD SEE HOW MUCH THIS WIN MEANT TO FRED HOIBERG. LAUREN. YOU COULD WATCH HIM WALKING OFF THE COURT, EXHALING LIKE A SIGH OF RELIEF. IT WAS A BIG SIGH OF RELIEF. AND COACH HOIBERG SAID LEADING UP TO THIS ONE, THERE WAS A TON OF ANXIETY TO GET THIS ELUSIVE WIN. THE HUSKERS, YOU KNOW, LOST TO PURDUE IN THE BIG TEN TOURNAMENT. THAT KIND OF HAD A LITTLE BIT OF DISAPPOINTMENT SURROUNDING IT, BUT THEY GOT IT DONE. NOT ONLY DID THEY WIN THEIR FIRST EVER TOURNAMENT GAME HERE IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT, BUT THEY ALSO SET A NEW PROGRAM RECORD FOR WINS WITH 27, A MAJOR SIGH OF RELIEF FOR ALL OF HUSKER NATION. JUST REALLY PROUD OF THESE GUYS, YOU KNOW, HAPPY TO GET THIS. YOU KNOW THIS WIN FOR THE FIRST ONE IN THE HISTORY OF THE PROGRAM. MOST WINS IN A SINGLE SEASON IN THE HISTORY OF THE PROGRAM. BUT WE CAN’T BE SATISFIED. WE GOT TO MOVE PAST IT. I ASKED THE GUYS, AS I DO EVERY AFTER EVERY WIN, ARE YOU SATISFIED? AND TO A MAN THEY SAID NO. SO GOT TO GET OVER IT QUICKLY. WE’LL HAVE A FILM SESSION TONIGHT ON WHOEVER WE WILL FACE IN THE NEXT ROUND, BUT COULDN’T BE MORE PROUD OF OUR GUYS. YEAH, IT’S REALLY HARD TO DESCRIBE THE FEELING RIGHT NOW. IT’S OVERWHELMING FEELING OF JUST HAPPINESS. I MEAN, THE ANXIETY I HAD GOING INTO THIS GAME, JUST KNOWING IT WAS EITHER GOING TO BE THE GREATEST FEELING OF ALL TIME OR THE WORST FEELING OF ALL TIME IF WE DIDN’T GET IT DONE. SO JUST BEING ABLE TO CELEBRATE IT AND BE HAPPY WITH THE LEGACY I LEFT BEHIND IS SUCH AN UNBELIEVABLE FEELING. NEBRASKA GUARD SAM HOIBERG TOLD ME THIS WEEK. HEY LOOK, MY TIME AS A HUSKER. MY FIVE SEASONS IN LINCOLN WOULD NOT BE COMPLETE WITHOUT NOT ONLY BRINGING NEBRASKA FANS AND THE PROGRAM HOME IN NCAA TOURNAMENT, BUT HIS FAMILY, HIS DAD AND HIS TWIN BROTHER CHARLIE ON STAFF AS WELL. AND ANDY, WE WOULD BE REMISS NOT TO TALK ABOUT THE IMPACT OF IOWA TRANSFER PRICE. STANFORD, IN HIS VERY FIRST NCAA TOURNAMENT GAME, 23 POINTS, SEVEN THREE, SEVEN THREE POINTERS, ONE OFF THE SCHOOL RECORD, AND HIS BROTHER PEYTON FLEW IN TO SURPRISE HIS BROTHER, PRICE. PEYTON PLAYS FOR THE OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER. THEY HAD A GAME LAST NIGHT IN BROOKLYN, BUT NOW THE HUSKERS MOVE ON. THEY’LL PLAY EITHER VANDERBILT OR MCNEESE. VANDERBILT LEADS THAT GAME RIGHT NOW BY SIX WITH ABOUT SIX MINUTES TO GO. THAT GAME WILL BE SATURDAY. WE’LL LEARN THAT TIME LATER ON TONIGHT, SOMETHING WE’VE NEVER HAD TO DEAL WITH. RIGHT. THE HUSKERS MOVE ON TO THE SECOND ROUND OF THE NCAA TOURNAMENT, REPORTING LIVE IN OKLAHOMA CIT
