‘Dedicated his life to that school’: Omaha Public Schools names North High Stadium project after longtime teacher
OMAHA, Neb. —
The Omaha Public Schools board voted to name a new stadium after a longtime OPS teacher. The board approved waiving policy to name the North High Stadium project the “Gene R. Haynes Stadium.”
The district says Haynes has been with OPS as a teacher and administrator for more than 50 years. He’s affectionately known as “Mr. North High” and has been a constant advocate for young people.

During the meeting Monday, OPS Board Vice President Kimara Snipes said the move was about more than naming a stadium.
“We are actually honoring someone whose leadership has helped shape generations,” Snipes said.
The new stadium is part of “Project Game ON” and is scheduled to open in the summer of 2027. A new YMCA is also being built.
“For a lot of people in North Omaha, North High is not just a school, it is a part of their identity,” Snipes said. “So naming the stadium after Mr. Haynes recognizes someone who dedicated his life to that school and to the students who walked its halls.”
