UNI hires Iowa State assistant Kyle Green as next men’s basketball coach

A familiar face is returning to Cedar Falls to take over the Northern Iowa men’s basketball program.Kyle Green was named the next UNI men’s basketball head coach Wednesday morning. Green, an assistant coach at Iowa State since 2021, had previously spent nearly two decades at UNI as an assistant coach and associate head coach in three separate stints.”I am incredibly honored and grateful for the opportunity to become the next head coach at UNI, a university and community that has meant so much to me and my family,” Green said in an announcement from UNI. “We are so thankful to Athletic Director Megan Franklin and President Nook for this opportunity.”Green spent his tenure at Iowa State leading the Cyclones’ defense, which was consistently ranked in the top 10 nationally in defensive efficiency. This will not be his first head coaching job. Green has been the head coach at multiple Division II and Division III programs: Western Colorado (2000-01), Lewis University (2004-06) and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (2011-12).Both of Green’s children, AJ and Emerson, played basketball at UNI. AJ Green was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year in both 2020 and 2022 and is currently in his fourth season with the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks. Emerson Green played five seasons for the women’s team, scoring 1,232 career points.Green will replace Ben Jacobson, who was hired this week at Utah State. He leaves Cedar Falls as the winningest coach in UNI men’s basketball history.
