More than 1.7 million attic stairway ladders sold nationwide recalled due to fall, injury risk

More than 1.7 million attic stairway ladders sold nationwide are being recalled due to a fall hazard that could lead to serious injury or death.
Louisville Ladder is recalling the attic stairway ladders because the bolts can break while in use, according to a notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

“The firm has received 11 reports of a bolt breaking, including one report of an injury to the neck, head and back,” the notice says.
The recall involved Louisville, Featherlite, Lite & Century attic stairway ladders with gas struts only. The recalled aluminum or wood frame ladders come with handrails and fold into the attic.
The recalled ladders were sold by Home Depot, Lowe’s, Amazon, Do It Best, Orgill and other retailers nationwide from November 2012 through July 2026 for between $170 and $600.
The recalled ladders were sold in different frame sizes to accommodate different-sized attic openings in the ceiling, including 22.5, 25.5 and 30 inches wide; 54 and 60 inches long; and ceiling heights ranging from 7 feet, 8 inches up to 12 feet.
The brand name and model number are located on the inside of the attic door.
Anyone who owns one of the recalled ladders should stop using it immediately and register here to receive a free repair kit containing two replacement bolts, washers and lock nuts with installation instructions.
