WASHINGTON —

Despite higher food costs, 62% of Americans said they plan to host a barbecue, cookout, picnic or other food-related event this Independence Day, according to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey conducted with Proper Insights & Analytics.

That’s a slight increase from last year, when 61% of respondents said they planned to host a food-related event for the holiday.

The NRF’s annual survey polled about 7,700 consumers about their plans for celebrating the Fourth of July.

On average, consumers are expected to spend $94.41 on food for the celebration, the highest recorded since 2014. That’s $1.07 more than the previous high of $93.34 in 2023.

In total, consumers will spend $9.4 billion on food for July 4, nearly 6% more than last year.

Even with higher food prices, 87% of consumers plan to celebrate the holiday this year, with some planning to attend community events, parades or fireworks displays.
