ABC News correspondent Victor Oquendo discusses Hantavirus with KETV in Omaha
Omaha is in the national spotlight as passengers from the Hantavirus-impacted cruise ship landed at Eppley Airfield Monday morning. ABC’s Victor Oquendo joined KETV to discuss the virus’ background.
SARPY COUNTY $4.02. BREAKING ON FIRST NEWS 17. PASSENGERS EXPOSED TO HANTAVIRUS ON A CRUISE SHIP. THEY LANDED IN OMAHA OVERNIGHT, AND THIS MORNING THEY ARRIVED BY BUS TO NEBRASKA MEDICAL CENTER TO BE MONITORED. SO THE STORY IS GAINING NATIONAL ATTENTION. AND WE KNOW ABC NEWS IS HERE IN OMAHA. KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN’S WAVERLE MONROE CAUGHT UP WITH THE CREWS FROM ABC TO HEAR HOW THEY’RE TACKLING THE STORY. WAVERLE. MELISSA, I’M HERE WITH ABC NEWS VICTOR OQUENDO AND VICTOR. A LOT OF THINGS DEVELOPING LOCALLY HERE AND NATIONALLY. WHAT’S THE LATEST. OKAY SO WE KNOW THAT ON THE SHIP THERE ARE STILL A FEW PEOPLE ON BOARD. THEY WILL ALL BE TAKEN OFF THE SHIP TODAY. THE LATEST WE JUST HEARD FROM FRENCH HEALTH OFFICIALS, THEY SAY THAT ONE OF THE FIVE FRENCH PEOPLE THAT THEY WERE TRANSPORTING TESTED POSITIVE FOR THE VIRUS. APPARENTLY, THEIR SYMPTOMS WORSENED OVERNIGHT, AND NOW THEY ARE BEING TAKEN CARE OF IN FRONT OF A SPECIAL INFECTIOUS DISEASE HOSPITAL, WHICH I IMAGINE IS PRETTY SIMILAR TO WHAT WE’RE IN FRONT OF HERE IN OMAHA. AND THEN ALSO, DO WE KNOW OR DO OFFICIALS KNOW WHERE THE VIRUS ORIGINATED FROM? YEAH, THAT’S THE BIG QUESTION, RIGHT. SO THE WORKING THEORY HAD BEEN THAT THE FIRST VICTIM, A DUTCH MAN, HAD CONTRACTED THE VIRUS IN ARGENTINA ON THE GROUND BEFORE BOARDING THE SHIP. THEY THOUGHT THAT HE MAY HAVE CONTRACTED IT WHILE BIRD WATCHING, THEY STOPPED AT A LANDFILL. HOWEVER, IT TURNS OUT THAT WAS IN THE SOUTH OF ARGENTINA AND THE AREA THAT HAS THESE RODENTS THAT CAN CARRY THIS RARE STRAIN OF THE HANTAVIRUS THAT’S ACTUALLY IN THE NORTH. SO AT THIS POINT. HOW THIS ALL COULD HAVE STARTED, BUT IT CERTAINLY BLEW UP AND TURNED INTO THIS WEEKS LONG ORDEAL HERE, WITH SO MUCH UNCERTAINTY FOR THOSE ON BOARD. I’M SURE THAT FOR THESE AMERICANS WHO JUST ARRIVED HERE A SHORT TIME AGO, THERE ARE NO DOUBT HAPPY TO BE HOME. ABSOLUTELY. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU SO MUCH, VICTOR. YEAH. I’D. THE FEDERAL. INCLUDING GOVERNOR JIM PILLEN REGARDING THE OUTBREAK. ALL RIGHT. A COUPLE TECHNICAL ISSUES WITH WAVERLE. MICROPHONE WAVERLE. THANK YOU SO MUCH. LIVE THIS MORNING OUTSIDE THE
