American passengers impacted by hantavirus outbreak flying to Omaha overnight
American passengers evacuated from the cruise ship impacted by the hantavirus outbreak began flying back to the U.S. on Sunday, and are expected to land in Omaha overnight.
LEADER KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN AT TEN. AMERICANS POSSIBLY EXPOSED TO HANTAVIRUS ON A CRUISE SHIP WILL LIKELY NOT FACE MANDATORY QUARANTINE. THANKS FOR JOINING US. I’M MADDIE AUGUSTINE. GLOBAL HEALTH AUTHORITIES ARE MONITORING EACH PASSENGER FROM THE CRUISE SHIPS. HEALTH KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN’S CONNER SCHMIDT IS LIVE AT UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA MEDICAL CENTER. HE EXPLAINS THE LATEST UPDATES ON POTENTIALLY BRINGING THE PASSENGERS TO OMAHA. CONNER. YEAH, MADDIE. THE CDC TOLD ABC NEWS. NONE OF THE 17 PASSENGERS HAVE TESTED POSITIVE FOR THE HANTAVIRUS, AND OFFICIALS SAY INSTEAD OF STAYING HERE AT THE QUARANTINE CENTER AT UNMC, THEY MAY INSTEAD MONITOR THEIR SYMPTOMS FROM HOME. SO THE RISK TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC IS LOW. THE RISK TO THE PEOPLE IN THE CANARY ISLANDS IS LOW. DOCTOR MARIA VAN KERKHOVE WITH THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION, SAYS PASSENGERS POSSIBLY EXPOSED TO HANTAVIRUS ABOARD THIS CRUISE SHIP WILL BE BROUGHT TO SHORE IN SMALL GROUPS. THE PLAN WILL BE THAT THE SHIP WILL ANCHOR AND THAT THERE WILL BE SMALL BOATS THAT WILL TAKE SOME OF THE PASSENGERS, AND IT WILL BE DONE IN A VERY CHOREOGRAPHED, COORDINATED WAY, IN A VERY PROTECTED WAY, KERKHOVE SAYS. IF ANYONE DEVELOPS SYMPTOMS PRIOR TO DOCKING, THEY’LL BE FLOWN ON A MEDICAL EVACUATION PLANE TO THE NETHERLANDS. RIGHT NOW, WE AS W.H.O., WE CLASSIFY EVERYBODY ON BOARD AS WHAT WE CALL A HIGH RISK CONTACT. THAT MIGHT SOUND SCARY, BUT IT’S REALLY WHAT IT’S IT’S HOW WE WILL OPERATIONALIZE THE MOVEMENT OF THE PASSENGERS AND THE CREW SAFELY HOME. IF CLEARED, PASSENGERS WOULD HEAD TO NEBRASKA, STAYING TEMPORARILY INSIDE NEBRASKA’S NATIONAL QUARANTINE UNIT, OR OFFICIALS SAY THEY CAN CHOOSE TO MONITOR SYMPTOMS FROM HOME FOR 42 DAYS. BUT WHAT WE DO RECOMMEND IS THE ACTIVE MONITORING AND FOLLOW UP OF ALL OF THE PASSENGERS AND CREW WHO DISEMBARK FOR A 42 DAY PERIOD. THAT DOESN’T MEAN 42 DAYS FROM NOW OR FROM TOMORROW. IT ACTUALLY MEANS 42 DAYS FROM THE LAST POINT OF EXPOSURE. OFFICIALS SAY THE QUARANTINE UNIT REMAINS AVAILABLE IF CONDITIONS CHANGE, BUT AS OF SATURDAY, THE CDC SAYS PASSENGERS ARE EXPECTED TO SPEND LIMITED TIME IN NEBRASKA. IT IS A VIRUS THAT CAN HAVE A PRETTY PROLONGED INCUBATION PERIOD, AND SO THAT’S SOMETHING THAT WE’RE DEFINITELY AWARE OF. AND AND AS WAS NOTED, WE’LL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE INDIVIDUALS THAT ARRIVE WITH US. DOCTORS ALSO EMPHASIZED THIS STRAIN OF HANTAVIRUS IS FAR DIFFERENT FROM COVID 19. THIS IS NOT A NEW VIRUS. THIS IS A VIRUS THAT HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE IN ARGENTINA AND CHILE. AND SO, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE NOT SEEN SUSTAINED HUMAN TO HUMAN TRANSMISSION WITH HANTAVIRUS, AS WE SAW WITH COVID 19. THE SHIP IS EXPECTED TO DOCK IN THE CANARY ISLANDS TOMORROW. AFTER THAT, THE PASSENGERS ARE EXPECTED TO HEAD THEIR WAY BACK TO THE U.S. CDC OFFICIALS SAY THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO PLANS TO REQUIRE QUARANTINE. I DID REACH OUT TO NEBRASKA MEDICINE ABOUT THESE CHANGES. THEY SAY THEY HAVE NO F
