Appeals court orders halt to White House ballroom construction

An appeals court has ordered a stop to the White House ballroom project unless President Trump gets congressional approval.

A federal appeals court has ruled that President Donald Trump must seek congressional approval to continue construction of the proposed East Wing ballroom at the White House.

The court stated, “Whether or not a massive ballroom should be constructed is for Congress to decide and is not a matter for Executive self-help.”

The three-judge panel sided with historic preservationists who sued to stop the construction.

The ruling does not mean the administration may not ultimately build the ballroom, but it prohibits construction during the litigation process without congressional approval.

The court said it will stay its ruling for two weeks, meaning construction does not necessarily have to stop immediately, to allow the administration to appeal to the Supreme Court.
