An Omaha man was arrested for allegedly beating a dog and duct-taping its mouth shut.Omaha police and Nebraska Humane Society responded to an apartment complex near 22nd and Leavenworth streets back on April 6. According to court documents, a caller reported hearing a dog yelping like “she was being killed”.An animal control officer with Nebraska Humane Society spoke to the dog’s owner, Jermaine Pearson, 42, who allegedly admitted to “punishing” his dog for digging and chewing at a wooden trim near his bed. He later elaborated, saying he used rolled-up magazines and newspapers to “tap” her.In court documents, that officer noticed the dog had duct tape tightly wound around its muzzle and was tethered to the bedpost.Pearson allegedly told investigators that he duct-taped the dog’s mouth to keep it quiet. An affidavit alleges that the dog’s mouth was wound so tight that “she could barely open her mouth or pant”.When asked how he planned on removing the tape, Pearson allegedly unfolded a pocketknife before OPD told him to put it away.Once at Nebraska Humane Society, they found the dog had apparent swelling and redness around its eyes, extensive bruising across the body, as well as trauma to the tip of its ear.Pearson was arrested on Wednesday and charged with animal cruelty.
