Running back Kwinten Ives strives to be more than a short yardage back, Big Red Expert Damon Benning says

LINCOLN, Neb. —

After three years, Kwinten Ives has yet to see extended play time for the Huskers, but according to Damon Benning of the Nebraska Radio Network, he’s striving to be more than a short yardage back.

“Ives is kind of the one that is not like the others. I think he found a role being the short yardage back, but he’s more than that. And so what they found with him is since he battled all the injuries, you know, his weight fluctuated. Then he was a big back, then he was a small back, then they saw him this spring. And, you know, he’s trimmed down and streamlined and he’s back to the fast, explosive Kwinten Ives. He can catch the football really well. Very good in pass protection, but he wants more. And so I think for him, he knows how to go to work, whether that’s contributing as a returner or getting out of the space.

While we don’t have a depth chart yet for the running back room, we do know that Mehki Nelson has the most experience.

He was arrested in June for aggravated battery, but Florida prosecutors have declined to file charges. And he is still listed on the 2026 roster.

Isaiah Mozee and Ives are both returners with some experience, and freshman Jamal Rule had a massive spring.
