Big Ten commissioner promotes Protect College Sports Act, playoff format

Big Ten Commissioner Tony Pettiti said people should support the Protect College Sports Act and a 24-team College Football Playoff format during his speech at media days Tuesday.

Petitti also commented on the Big Ten’s relationship with the SEC, particularly when it comes to the Protect College Sports Act and bringing in more non-conference matchups.

But he said that there is not enough predictability.

“I think coaches, athletic directors operate in the system and want to make sure the rules are the same for everybody that they apply evenly. It doesn’t mean everybody is going to have the same resources. That’s just not going to happen in the college athletics space. Even if you decide you are going to have some sort of cap and you make the cap harder, you’re still going to have a discrepancy in resources, and you’re going to have to respect that. So, what we want is to have as much competitive balance as possible. We have a great shot to win with that,” Petitti said.

The commissioner also said he knows the SEC wants to stick with the current College Football Playoff format, but added a 24-team playoff gives more teams access to the playoff.

Petitti added he won’t give a scheduling mandate in the Big Ten until they get clarity with the playoffs.

Nebraska coach Matt Rhule will also speak to reporters for the first time ahead of fall camp.
