Bill Randby breaks down weather phenomenon that was caught on video during Creighton Prep soccer practice
OLIVIA RUBIN, ABC NEWS, WASHINGTON. BACK HERE AT HOME, A RARE WEATHER PHENOMENON WAS CAUGHT ON CAMERA AT CREIGHTON PREP YESTERDAY. A DUST DEVIL, OR MAYBE MORE OF A TURF DEVIL. OMAHA CHIEF METEOROLOGIST BILL RANDBY EXPLAINS. I’M NOT SURE THAT I’VE EVER SEEN THIS BEFORE. THIS IS CREIGHTON PREP SOCCER PRACTICE ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, APRIL 29TH. AT FIRST, IT LOOKS LIKE THE FIELD IS BEING LIFTED UP AND APPROACHING. THESE PLAYERS AND COACHES AND STUDENTS. AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY START FEELING THEMSELVES BEING PELTED BY LITTLE RUBBER PELLETS. THEN THEY HAVE TO KIND OF RUN OUT OF THE WAY. AND AS THEY GET CLOSER TO THE SIDELINE, IT STARTS TO BECOME MORE OBVIOUS WHAT’S HAPPENING. IT’S A DUST DEVIL WITH NO DUST. YOU’LL SEE CLOSE START FLYING AROUND. BUT A DUST DEVIL OCCURS IN AN OPEN AREA. YOU GET SOME HEATING. AIR WILL SOMETIMES BEGIN RISING, AND IF THERE’S A LITTLE GUST OF WIND, IT WILL START SPINNING, ALMOST LIKE A MINI TORNADO. FASCINATING. CREIGHTON COACH REACHED OUT TO US AND SAID, HEY, WE NEED TO SEND THIS TO BILL. CAN HE EXPLAIN WHAT HAPPENED? IT’S CRAZY BECAUSE WE’VE SEEN VIDEO OF DUST DEVILS. YOU SEE THAT? YOU KNOW, LOOKS LIKE A LITTLE TORNADO BLUE SKIES OR SOMETHING, BUT, YOU KNOW, LOOK LIKE A GHOST THERE. INITIALLY, THERE WAS NOTHING THERE, BUT THE PLAYERS CONFIRMED
