Bodycam shows Texas deputies rescuing man from burning vehicle

Intense body camera footage shows deputies and other responders in Texas rescuing a man from a burning vehicle near a church camp after reports of erratic driving earlier this month.

In a social media post, the Wise County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the incident in Bridgeport, Texas, and used a drone to locate the vehicle in the woods, where flames fully engulfed it.

Deputies ran down a steep embankment to reach the passenger and tried to pull him to safety, but the sheriff’s office said the man, at first, resisted their efforts as the fire burned in triple-digit heat and as a small explosion occurred.

“Get out, come on,” a deputy can be heard saying as responders try to pull the man from the vehicle. “Get out, dude, come on. You’re going to die if you don’t get out.”

As they continue to work to free the man from the wreckage, deputies can be heard calling to him and encouraging him to get out as they try to pull him from the vehicle.

“Come on, bro,” a deputy says, before asking the man if he is OK and encouraging him to work with them to extricate him from the vehicle.

Deputies eventually got him out, and a deputy can be seen breathing heavily and saying, “He’s safe, he’s safe. We got him, we got him.”

That’s when a winded deputy radios to a dispatcher to say, “We got the passenger out of the car.”

The man, whose identity hasn’t been released, was airlifted to a hospital with burns and other injuries. Two deputies also went to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation.

“What this footage demonstrates is more than a response,” the sheriff’s office said in posting the video to Facebook. “It shows the strength, determination, perseverance, and commitment of the first responders who came together to help a citizen in need.”

The sheriff’s office also credited other first responder agencies who helped rescue the person and get the situation under control.

“This is why multi-agency collaboration matters. When the situation is at its most challenging, our community can count on these men and women to keep working together until the job is done,” the sheriff’s office said. “We are proud of everyone who played a part in this response, and grateful for their courage and dedication to the citizens of Wise County.”

Wise County is a part of the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area, and Bridgeport is around 51 miles from Fort Worth.
